What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the past of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early yearsâa moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.
Heads Up: The following reveals crucial plot points for the concluding episodes.
The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.
Like many elements this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is understood of his research, the container most likely held samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powersâtraits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
