The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years Old

The world grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born musician and actor whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and positive spirit earned him a vast and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

He was one of just a handful of musicians, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
