The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.
A recent acronym emerged a couple of months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to doctors like paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for doctors to attend to a child who has lost their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Officials has denied these accusations, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is completely different.
A Double Standard
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
