Senegal's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. âI only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,â remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot. However, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. âHe didnât want me to play football simply because he hadnât seen me play,â says Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on âa special day,â he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, the famed academy â the club that produced talents including Sadio ManĂ©, Papiss CissĂ© and IsmaĂŻla Sarr â saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were âastonishedâ to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. âI was taken straight to the training centre. They didnât want me from going back home,â he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, âa year to remember,â which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating ManĂ©. âSettling in wasn't a problem,â states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's âmodestyâ and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been shown red early in his spells at each French club. âIt's a trait that is following me!â he quips.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. âAs soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,â he said.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. âWe are the team to beat â we canât hide from that. After defeating England in their own countryâŠ,â he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. âI feel really at ease here,â he affirms. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
âWe are the favourites â we canât hide from that. If you beat England in their own country⊠it gives you confidence.â
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
