Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Passing on undesired offerings could be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by world leaders while abroad. The diverse haul could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date remains to be announced, but the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue going to a selection of charitable causes.

The presents reportedly kept in a secure area on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust indefinitely.
The detailed catalog remains officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The question focused on if a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. By law, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Political Context
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from within her party, with winning over international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.
This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to deal with the state presents that are collected during a political career.
