Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
