People have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The attack saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the discussions said that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The representative said the morning session ended without significant progress, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Key Issues in Talks

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Future administration of the area

Citizen Feeling

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No place seems like home now and until each abducted person are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Activist one woman remarked: "We need do every compromise needed for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and locality areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"As the dusk arrives, the anxiety comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, described.

"We are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Every second we check the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had taken in the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported additional fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, medical staff reported.
