International Bodies and the UK Decry a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Prison Term.
The judicial ruling of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have described the legal verdicts driven by politics.
Global Condemnation and Calls for Release
The United Kingdom's foreign affairs chief Yvette Cooper stated that the two-decade sentence constitutes a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She labeled the legal case as having political underpinnings via a statute intended to muzzle critics of China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and release him to his family.
“This ruling illustrates how the vague and overly broad stipulations of Hong Kong’s national security legislation are subject to interpretation in contravention of universal rights standards,” remarked UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deplores” the result of the lengthy trial and called for his immediate and unconditional release.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered activist publication, was taken into custody four years ago the enactment of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities in the wake of widespread unrest backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was ultimately convicted on charges including colluding to publish subversive content and colluding with overseas entities. The second set of accusations were based on the disputed legislation.
A Son’s Anguish
His son, Sebastien Lai, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation without seeing his family again. His international counsel labeled him the “planet's most prominent detainee” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai noted that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, even as it offered some “respite” that the court process had concluded.
International Ramifications
The verdict has cast a shadow over the bilateral relationship. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, any potential progress on obtaining his liberty remains unclear.
Sebastien Lai questioned the value of a visa-free travel agreement while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “a bit tone deaf.”
Official Responses
Conversely, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the sentence manifested that “the rule of law is upheld.”
The mouthpiece of China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “primary instigator” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the legal case had been “legitimate and lawful.” He advised international actors to refrain from intervention in China’s internal affairs.
A Defining Moment
Media freedom advocates labeled Lai as a symbol of declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general said it was a “dark day for those who cherish a independent media.”
Given an almost 100% conviction rate for national security offences, Lai’s severe sentence is viewed as the most severe yet handed down under the controversial legislation.
