Edwards along with Gary O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the team's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous associations to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton Town manager - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves directors as they start the process of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham player is out of work which means Wolves would not be required to provide any compensation.
