Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business with his partner, disclosed that he plans to personally create this new product as part of an individual collection highlighting issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders and Parent Company
The recent announcement intensifies the continuing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally created several years back to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Future Intentions
The founder indicated that he will create additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries that its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
